Gardens that sit in exposed positions often feel the full force of the weather, with strong winds putting constant pressure on boundary fencing throughout the year. Choosing a fencing style that works with the wind rather than against it makes a significant difference.

Ideal for windy locations; semi‑solid fencing is built to allow airflow through the structure, helping to minimise resistance and making it a practical choice for more exposed gardens. This is why semi-solid or slatted fence panels are the best type of fencing for windy areas. Rather than resisting the wind like a solid barrier, these designs reduce pressure on panels and posts by letting gusts filter through the structure.

Why Slatted Fence Panels Perform Better in Wind

In strong winds, a solid fence panel behaves much like a sail. With nowhere for the air to escape, the panel receives the full force of the wind, transferring stress into the rails, fixings, and posts. This can lead to panels bowing, rattling, or even being blown out entirely. This is particularly prevalent with slotted concrete posts.

Slatted fence panels are classed as semi‑solid designs. The spaced gaps between the slats reduce wind resistance by allowing airflow through the panel. Instead of fighting the wind, the fence absorbs less pressure, which significantly reduces stress on both the panel and the posts that support it.

This combination of airflow and strength makes slatted fencing an excellent choice for gardens that experience frequent or severe gusts, particularly in exposed or elevated locations.

Are Slatted Fence Panels Windproof or Wind Resistant?

Slatted fence panels are best described as wind resistant, not windproof. Their open design allows wind to pass through, reducing pressure on the panels and posts. For a fence to be ‘windproof’ it would need to be engineered with wind loading calculations; only really done with very tall or commercial fences.

Slatted Fence Panel Options for Windy Gardens

Not all slatted designs are the same. Below are the slatted fence panels we recommend for wind‑prone locations, with varying levels of airflow, privacy, and visual impact.

Venetian Fence Panels

A firm favourite with garden designers, our Venetian slatted fence panels feature 45mm horizontal slats with 15mm gaps between each board. This consistent spacing allows plenty of airflow while maintaining a clean, contemporary look. Venetian panels are ideal if you want a balance of wind resistance, light, and a modern aesthetic.

Louvre Angled Slat Fence Panels

Louvre panels use thick timber slats fixed at an angle. This clever design offers improved privacy while still allowing wind to pass through the panel. They are particularly popular for screening areas of the garden without completely blocking light or airflow, making them both stylish and practical for exposed sites.

Metro Frameless Slatted Panels

Metro panels offer a continuous slatted appearance with no visible posts interrupting the design. This frameless style works especially well where privacy is less of a concern, similar to Venetian fencing, and creates a sleek, modern boundary that performs well in windy conditions.

Hit and Miss Fence Panels

A more traditional choice, Hit and Miss panels are particularly effective in windy gardens. The overlapping boards create a robust, semi‑solid panel that allows wind to pass through without compromising strength. Framed for additional rigidity and available in horizontal or vertical designs, they offer a timeless solution for exposed locations while increasing privacy.

A contemporary and sleek variation of our Venetian fence panel, Venetian Hit and Miss fence panels complement modern gardens as well as more traditional style gardens beautifully. The overlapping slats increase strength and privacy while still allowing gusts to filter through, making them well suited to somewhat harsh weather.

Urban Slatted Panels

Urban panels feature smaller gaps between the slats, delivering a much higher level of privacy compared to typical slatted designs. They still offer sufficient airflow to reduce wind pressure and can be installed vertically or horizontally for added design flexibility.

Woven Fence Panels

Woven panels are made from interwoven timber slats, creating a distinctive pattern that casts dappled light and shade across the garden. They are double‑sided, with no visible rails, meaning both sides benefit from the “good” side. Their open weave reduces wind resistance, although visibility through the panel can vary depending on the angle.

Shorter Fencing for Exposed Locations

Shorter fencing creates far less wind resistance, making it ideal for front gardens and boundary definition. Post and rail, palisade, and our Jaktop fencing all allow wind to pass through easily while clearly marking boundaries. Metal fencing, such as Bow Top, Estate railings, or ornamental designs, is another excellent option, offering durability, airflow, and a more decorative finish without restricting the wind.

Installation Matters Just as Much as Panel Choice

While slatted fence panels are an excellent starting point, a truly wind‑resistant fence relies on more than just the panel design. Key installation factors include:

  • Using heavy duty slotted posts to support taller or heavier panels.
  • Choosing longer posts and installing them deeper into the ground, at least 600mm, and deeper in high wind areas.
  • Screwing timber panels to posts wherever possible to prevent movement in strong gusts.
  • Avoiding concrete posts, which can cause panels to rattle and may allow panels to lift out in high winds.
  • Using plenty of post‑fixing mix to create a solid, stable foundation.

There is no single solution for every environment, but combining these installation methods with semi‑solid fencing dramatically reduces the risk of fence failure.
