Creating a peaceful outdoor space can be challenging when your home sits close to a busy road. This property is located just outside of a village where the speed limit changes from 30 mph to national speed limit. As vehicles accelerate, noise levels increase significantly, leading to constant disturbance throughout the day. The existing boundary consisted of an old featherboard fence which offered little resistance to sound. Like most standard garden fencing, it allowed noise to pass straight through gaps and lightweight boards.
The homeowners wanted an effective solution that would reduce traffic noise while also improving the overall appearance and security of their garden. Acoustic fencing was a necessary solution.
The acoustic fencing solution
To address the issue, 64.2 metres of 2.5 metre high acoustic fencing was installed. The project in Kent was completed by our Approved Installers, Unique Fencing, based in the South East. They installed the acoustic fencing to follow the slope of the driveway and integrate with an existing automated gate, requiring precise alignment to achieve a seamless and secure finish across the boundary.
Unlike standard garden fence panels, our Jakoustic® Reflective fencing is specifically engineered to block and reflect sound. The acoustic fencing system uses thick interconnecting components to create a continuous barrier with no gaps. This is essential in achieving effective noise reduction, as even small openings can allow sound waves to pass through.

Installation and performance
Our acoustic fencing systems are installed differently from standard garden fencing. The tongue and groove boards are installed within a unique tuning fork post system, which eliminates gaps, ensuring high performance sound insulation.
Positioning also plays an important role. Acoustic fencing is most effective when installed close to the noise source or the area being protected. Here, the fencing runs along the roadside boundary, helping to intercept sound before it spreads into the garden. This direct placement significantly improves the performance of the acoustic fencing compared to installations set further away. Acoustic fencing is especially useful in locations like this, where a property is close to a busy road with changing speed limits. As vehicles accelerate, vehicle noise can become more intrusive, but a well designed acoustic fencing system can significantly reduce this impact.
The Jakoustic® reflective acoustic fencing installed on this project is capable of achieving sound reductions of up to 28 decibels based on laboratory testing.
