How to reduce road noise in the garden
Living near a busy road can make it difficult to fully enjoy your garden. This was the challenge faced by a homeowner whose property backed onto a heavily used highway. Despite having a well designed garden filled with mature trees and natural features, the constant flow of traffic noise made the outdoor space far less enjoyable.
The issue was made even more challenging by the presence of a nearby bus stop and increasing traffic levels, which amplified noise throughout the day. What should have been a tranquil retreat had become an underused area due to the relentless disturbance.

A garden designer was brought in to create a solution that would reduce noise while maintaining the character and ecological value of the space. Their answer was carefully planned acoustic fencing, designed to balance performance with environmental sensitivity.

This was not a straightforward installation. The property was located within a conservation area, meaning that any changes required approval from Shropshire Council. The garden was also home to protected wildlife, including a local bat population, and featured a number of established trees that needed to be preserved.
From the outset, it was clear that installing acoustic fencing would require a thoughtful and considered approach. The goal was not only to reduce noise but also to ensure that the integrity of the natural surroundings was maintained.
Planning permission was obtained with a focus on protecting the existing landscape. Specialist tree surgeons were enlisted to carefully move and reposition several trees, some by as much as 500mm, to accommodate the new fence line without causing damage. In addition, local ecologists were consulted before removing any dead trees to ensure the nearby bat community would not be disturbed.
This collaborative approach ensured that the project could proceed responsibly, combining effective noise reduction with environmental care.

The Existing Boundary
Before the installation, the boundary between the garden and the road consisted of a basic post and wire fence. While this provided demarcation, it offered no meaningful reduction in sound and little privacy, safety, and security.
Noise travelled freely through the open structure, allowing traffic sounds to dominate the garden. It was clear that a more robust and purpose built solution was required to create a noticeable difference.
Jakoustic® Reflective Acoustic Fencing
To tackle the problem, our Jakoustic® Reflective acoustic fencing was selected. This high performance system is specifically designed to reduce noise pollution by reflecting sound away from the area behind the fence.
Standing at 1.8 metres tall, the acoustic fencing forms a solid and continuous barrier between the garden and the road. Unlike traditional fencing, it is constructed using interlocking timber boards that eliminate gaps, creating a solid barrier that reduces the amount of sound waves passing through.
When traffic noise reaches the surface of the acoustic fencing, the sound waves are reflected back towards the source, significantly reducing the amount that enters the garden. This makes it an ideal solution for properties located close to busy roads or other sources of persistent noise.

Blending Performance with Design
One of the key advantages of this type of acoustic fencing is that it combines functionality with attractive design. The smooth timber finish creates a natural appearance that complements garden landscapes, ensuring the fence does not feel intrusive or industrial.
In this project, the new acoustic fencing was carefully integrated into the existing tree line, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. The result is a boundary that not only performs well but also enhances the overall look of the space.
The solid structure also improves privacy, providing a secluded environment that can be enjoyed without overlooking or external distractions. In addition, it offers improved security compared to the previous wire fence, creating a safer and more enclosed garden.
Given the conservation area status and environmental constraints, installing the acoustic fencing required precision and care. Every aspect of the process was planned to minimise disruption to the site.
From repositioning trees to consulting wildlife experts, the project demonstrates how acoustic fencing can be implemented even in sensitive environments when handled by experienced professionals.
This careful approach ensured that the installation met both regulatory requirements and the client’s expectations, without compromising on performance.

From Traffic Noise to Peaceful Living
Once installed, the impact of the acoustic fencing was immediately evident. The previously dominant noise from the nearby highway was significantly reduced, creating a much calmer and more enjoyable atmosphere within the garden.
While no solution can remove all sound entirely, the reduction achieved was enough to transform how the space could be used. The garden, once avoided due to noise, became a relaxing outdoor area once again.
The new fencing also delivered additional benefits, including enhanced privacy, improved security, and a more polished and cohesive appearance.
Why Acoustic Fencing Is an Effective Solution
This case study highlights the versatility and effectiveness of acoustic fencing in residential settings. Even in complex scenarios involving conservation areas and protected wildlife, it can provide a practical and long lasting solution to noise problems.
Key benefits of acoustic fencing include:
- Reduced impact of traffic and environmental noise
- Solid construction that eliminates sound gaps
- Enhanced privacy and security
- Attractive finish that complements natural surroundings
- Durable design backed by a 25 year guarantee for long-term peace of mind
For homeowners dealing with similar challenges, acoustic fencing offers a reliable way to reclaim outdoor spaces and improve quality of life without compromising on design or sustainability.
