Gardens now play an increasingly important part in supporting wildlife because so much natural habitat has been lost from the wider countryside.

Creating a wildlife friendly garden is one of the most effective and rewarding ways to enhance your outdoor space. Not only does it support local ecosystems, but it also brings movement, colour, and seasonal interest right to your doorstep.

Small, considered additions within a garden can create pockets of food, shelter, and safe passage that make a real difference to local species. One of the simplest and most effective tools for achieving this is with trellis panels. When used thoughtfully, trellis panels can become a powerful feature that help pollinators thrive, encourage nesting wildlife, and provide essential structure for wildlife friendly plants.

In this guide, we explore how trellis panels support wildlife, how to use them throughout your garden, and how pairing them with a hedgehog friendly gravel board can make your outdoor space even more accessible to garden visitors. We also look at the different trellis styles available from Jacksons Fencing and how each one can contribute to a rich and varied habitat.

Why Trellis Panels Are Ideal for Wildlife Friendly Gardens

Trellis panels are much more than decorative garden features. They provide vertical structure, shelter, shade, and essential climbing support for a wide range of plants. These plants often become food sources, habitats, or resting places for wildlife.

The following are some of the ways trellis panels help support nature:

1. Attracting Pollinators

Pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hoverflies are drawn to climbing plants that flourish with the support of trellis panels. Vertical planting creates a mass of blooms at varying heights, which is especially helpful for species that prefer to feed away from ground level. Flowering climbers also offer nectar over a longer season when layered effectively.

2. Providing Nesting and Resting Spots

A trellis panel covered with suitable planting can create sheltered pockets that small birds may use as nesting or resting spaces. Dense foliage can also help protect beneficial insects from wind, rain, and predators.

3. Adding Wildlife Corridors

Trellis panels can act as connecting points across the garden. By linking planting areas with vertical greenery, you help wildlife move safely and confidently through the space. This is particularly useful in modern gardens where solid boundaries can limit natural movement.

Choosing the Right Trellis Panel Style

There are many types of trellis panels available, and different trellis designs suit varied planting and wildlife. Jacksons Fencing offers a range of trellis panels manufactured to last, each with its own benefits for both aesthetics and habitat creation.

Square Trellis Panels

Traditional square trellis panels offer a timeless look. The regular grid structure provides sturdy support for heavier or more vigorous climbers such as honeysuckle or evergreen ivy. When covered, square trellis can create dense foliage that provides shelter for nesting birds and beneficial insects.

Diamond Trellis Panels

Diamond trellis panels offer a softer, more decorative finish. The angled apertures lend themselves well to ornamental climbers and scented plants. Once established, diamond trellis panels can also create excellent hiding spots for small wildlife, offering structure and shadow throughout the seasons.

Lattice Trellis Panels

Our small square trellis panel, Lattice, features closely spaced battens to provide a trellis panel with more privacy than other trellis styles. When left bare, Lattice trellis panels are ideal for adding partial screening or creating a sense of enclosure without blocking light. With a compact grid pattern, small square trellis like Lattice is ideal for training climbing plants neatly due to the multiple gaps for plants to weave and grow, resulting in dense flowering screens that are highly appealing to pollinators.

Tartan Trellis Panels

Tartan trellis panels are unique to Jacksons. A distinctive design with additional horizontal and vertical battens that create a layered, textured appearance. This makes them particularly strong and ideal for supporting wildlife friendly plants that grow vigorously or need additional anchoring points. The varied pattern also gives wildlife many nooks and resting places as plants develop across the panel.

Wildlife Safety with Trellis Panels

While trellis panels are excellent for providing habitats and supporting wildlife, incorrect installation can reduce their effectiveness and even pose risks. When trellis is installed at ground level, the gaps can create a hazard for small and medium-sized mammals such as fox cubs and hedgehogs, which may become trapped if they try to squeeze through.

To help keep wildlife safe, and to protect the panel itself, we always recommend installing trellis on a gravel board when it is used as a full height panel, or alternatively it can be fixed to raised beds. Raising the trellis off the ground prevents animals from becoming stuck, and also protects the timber from moisture related rot while ensuring the installation meets the requirements of the 25 year guarantee. In addition, the gravel board will help support the weight of heavy climbers and foliage covering trellis panels over time.

You can also go one step further in helping wildlife by switching a gravel board with a hedgehog friendly one if the trellis panel is installed as part of a boundary.

Support Ground Level Wildlife with a Hedgehog Friendly Gravel Board

A hedgehog friendly gravel board is designed with a pre cut access hole so hedgehogs can move freely between gardens. This is essential because hedgehogs can travel up to a mile each night in search of food.

Pairing a hedgehog friendly gravel board with trellis panels creates an ideal combination. The gravel board keeps timber fencing raised off the ground and protected from moisture while allowing hedgehogs to pass underneath. Above, the trellis panels provide vertical habitat, meaning wildlife can navigate the garden from ground level to canopy. If you do not want to use a gravel board, you can raise the panels slightly off the ground instead, as seen in the photo below.

Trellis Panels and Wildlife Friendly Planting

Pairing trellis panels with the right plants will ensure your garden becomes a thriving hub for nature. Consider these plant categories when planning:

Nectar Rich Climbers

  • Honeysuckle
  • Clematis viticella varieties
  • Jasmine
  • Passionflower

These will draw bees and butterflies while adding fragrance and colour.

Berries and Shelter

  • Pyracantha
  • Blackberry or hybrid berry varieties
  • Ivy

These offer food and habitat for birds, particularly through autumn and winter.

Evergreen Coverage

Evergreen climbers provide year round shelter for insects and nesting spots for birds. They also support overwintering butterflies and moths by giving them protected areas to rest.

Creating Wildlife Friendly Zones with Trellis Panels

Trellis panels offer more than simple plant support. They can be used thoughtfully to build layered, wildlife rich spaces.

1. Screening and Privacy with Added Habitat Value

Instead of opting for solid fencing alone, combining fence panels with trellis sections introduces permeability that helps wildlife move around the garden. Trellis toppers also lift climbing plants into the sun, encouraging more flowers and more pollinator activity.

2. Dividing Garden Spaces

Using trellis to partition seating areas, patios, or planting beds helps create micro habitats. These divisions introduce sheltered spots that attract insects and protect birds from larger predators.

3. Vertical Wildflower Areas

While wildflower meadows are popular, smaller gardens can achieve a similar effect with vertical planting. Using trellis panels in sunlit areas, you can create vertical plains of nectar rich flowers that are irresistible to bees.

Trellis panels are one of the most versatile tools in a wildlife friendly garden. Whether you prefer lattice, square, diamond, or tartan trellis panels, each style has unique benefits for supporting climbing plants and attracting nature. When combined with wildlife friendly planting and a hedgehog friendly gravel board, your garden can become a thriving sanctuary that benefits pollinators, birds, insects, and mammals throughout the year.
