Storm Dudley, Eunice, and Franklin caused a lot of destruction during the month of February. Fencing and walls across the UK were common victims of the strong winds. This scenario was no exception for a couple who live in Kelsall, West Cheshire, who’s wall was severely damaged during the storms, forcing them to replace it.

Walls can be expensive to replace especially if old stone needs to be matched. Walls can also incur higher labour costs as they often take a lot longer to install than fencing. Fencing is a great alternative that is much more cost effective.

A Chester based Jacksons Approved Installer, The Fencing Bloke, was enlisted to help restore the property's boundary and replace the storm damaged wall with fencing. The decision was made to replace it with our Chilham fence panels and Roman topper.

1.20m Chilham fence panels were chosen, as the customers expressed their desire for a fence panel that not only looked good from the outside, but that they could also enjoy from inside their home. They also required a fence panel that offered privacy from the shared driveway area to allow them to fully relax in the garden.

Chilham, a double-sided fence panel is a solid panel constructed without any visible rails offering maximum levels of privacy and the same appearance on both sides.

In contrast to this the Roman topper panel, which gets its name from the design similarities of classic Roman columns, is made up of vertical slats with an open design. Despite its slatted design, it does offer more privacy than other topper panels or trellis without blocking vital light.

Roman topper panels are available in 0.33m height and offer a distinctive ornate finish to fencing. They are designed for use with our slotted Jakposts® and sit perfectly on top of our range of fence panels.

The two chosen panels work well together, each facilitating a different attribute such as privacy and natural light, which we all want in a garden. Combining a solid fence panel with semi-solid topper panel is a great way to maximise light while maintaining privacy. Alternatively, our Canterbury Combi fence panel is a great ready-made option that combines Tongue and Groove Effect fence panels with a Venetian style topper.

In total the fence height is 1.81m with the two additional 140mm gravel boards. From the patio this will be shorter due to the raised ground level.

Replacing a wall with fencing

Replacing walls can also add more installation hurdles as the previous foundations will run the entire length of the existing walls. This was made harder due to the abnormal weather conditions during the installations, that caused post holes to fill up with water as soon as they were dug out.

As the ground is on a slight incline and the patio higher than ground level, adjustments needed to be made to compensate for this. Alterations were also made to an existing brick wall to make the fencing match up perfectly.

Both Chilham fence panels and Roman toppers are designed for use with our slotted Jakposts®. By choosing Timber slotted posts fence panels can be secured to a fence post using stainless steel screws. This technique is a great deterrent against burglars and intruders as the fence panels cannot be easily lifted out, like they could if concrete fence posts were used.
