A garden gate is often the first thing visitors notice, setting the tone for the rest of your outdoor space.

Most garden gates are sold without hinges or fittings, leaving installers to source and attach them separately. Every Jacksons garden gate, however, comes complete with high quality adjustable hinges, a ring latch, and all essential fittings already in place, ready to hang. This not only saves considerable time during installation but also provides the assurance that everything has been fitted to the correct specification.

A range of additional accessories is also available to further enhance security, functionality, and appearance.

From locks and latches to decorative features, the right accessories can make your gate easier to use, more secure, and better suited to your needs. Here’s a guide to popular garden gate accessories, their uses, and how to choose between them.

Decorative & Functional Enhancement

Ring Latch

This simple ring latch allows access to the gate from either side. It keeps the gate securely closed until the ring is turned, releasing the latch and allowing the gate to open. The straightforward design makes it practical, reliable, and easy to use, which is why every Jacksons standard garden gate is supplied with one as standard.

Capping Rail

A capping rail is often added to fences or gates to help prevent water soaking into the boards and causing them to rot. With a Jacksons fence or gate, this isn’t necessary thanks to our superior design and pressure treatment. Instead, the capping rail serves purely as a decorative feature, creating a neat and attractive finish. Every garden gate we make includes a capping rail as standard, except for styles such as picket or Jaktop gates where it cannot be fitted.

Gate Hinges
All our garden gates are supplied with adjustable hinges as standard. As wood is a natural material; wooden gates naturally move over time, adjustable hinges are highly recommended, as they allow quick and simple realignment without the need to remove or refit the hinges.

For larger or heavier gates, upgrading to heavy duty hinges is advised to provide additional strength and long term durability.

Weather Strips
Fitted to the bottom of a gate to reduce gaps, helping block debris or draughts.

Shutting strips

Wooden strips are fitted to the sides and middle of the gate, providing a secure surface for the gate leaf to close against. This design protects both the gate and the posts, ensuring greater durability and stability.

Choosing the Right Garden Gate Accessories

When selecting garden gate accessories, think about:

  • Security level – Is it for a decorative garden entrance, or a driveway that needs extra protection?
  • Frequency of use – High-traffic gates benefit from automatic latches or return springs.
  • Aesthetics – Decorative hinges or finials can elevate your gate’s appearance.
  • Environment – In windy or exposed locations, gate stops and cabin hooks can prevent damage.

Whether you’re upgrading for security, convenience, or style, the right garden gate accessories will make a noticeable difference. With Jacksons’ high quality fixings and fittings, you can be sure your gate not only looks good but works flawlessly for years to come.
