For this project, the client wanted to define the boundary along the side of their home without creating an imposing or overly tall fence.

Privacy was not a major concern as the area runs alongside the house and faces their own garden, so instead the focus was on style, consistency, and creating a welcoming appearance.

Timberscapes, one of our Approved Installers based in Godalming, Surrey were enlisted to carry out the project.

The decorative Design Choice

The customer selected Horizontal Tongue and Groove Effect fence panels topped with Diamond Trellis to achieve a balance of solidity and openness. The lower section of the fence provides a neat, contemporary look, while the trellis allows light to pass through and keeps the overall boundary feeling airy. This combination makes the fence feel less heavy against the walls of the house and helps soften the transition between the home and garden.

A bespoke gate was also made to match the design of the panels, ensuring a seamless flow across the entire boundary. The garden gate features the same tongue and groove effect boards with a diamond trellis topper, paired with robust galvanised fittings for strength and durability.

The Benefits of decorative Trellis Toppers

Trellis toppers are a versatile addition to fencing, adding decorative interest while also increasing the overall height of a fence without creating a solid barrier. They allow light and air to flow through, which helps outdoor spaces feel open and welcoming rather than closed in. When combined with our fence panels, they provide an elegant way to introduce climbing plants, enhance garden privacy in a softer way, and add an attractive finishing touch. In this project, the diamond trellis complements the clean horizontal lines of the panels, creating a fence that is both stylish and functional.

Why a Shorter Fence?

Because the boundary runs close to the house, a full-height fence would have felt too dominant and blocked natural light from reaching the windows. By choosing a shorter boundary fence, the customer maintained a clear line of sight from inside the house, keeping the area bright and open.

The garden also backs onto a pathway, making a shorter fence ideal for maintaining a sense of openness and connection to the surroundings. With its shorter height, the fence provides clear sightlines of passersby for safety and security and does not restrict views of the planning and trees beyond, seamlessly blending them into the main garden and extending the feeling of green space.

The addition of trellis panels also introduces a decorative touch that will become even more attractive over time if climbing plants are trained through it, softening the look further and blending the structure into the surrounding garden.

The end result is a smart, uniform boundary that enhances the property without overwhelming it. The smooth horizontal lines of the tongue and groove effect boards complement the brickwork of the home, while the diamond trellis creates a traditional detail that adds character. The gravel pathway running alongside the fence frames it beautifully and creates a tidy, low-maintenance finish.

This project is a great example of how choosing the right fence height and style for the space can make all the difference. Instead of prioritising privacy, the customer opted for aesthetics, light, and balance, achieving a boundary that feels perfectly at home in its setting.
