Help the Hedgehogs

Hedgehog Fencing

Welcome to our dedicated Hedgehog page

This page details advice and information to how we can all help hedgehogs and explains the steps Jacksons are taking to make a difference. The hedgehog population has suffered a severe decline in the last decade, dropping by around 25%. One contributory factor could possibly be that nowadays we are all a lot keener on fencing in our properties, and sturdy fencing panels with gravel boards at the bottom could be putting an abrupt stop to many established hedgehog runs.

Hedgehog Tip 1

Food and fresh water will encourage hedgehogs to return. Leave out foods like cat food (not fish based) or crushed cat biscuits.

HEDGEHOG Tip 2

If you have a pond, make sure at least one edge slopes gently to allow hedgehogs an escape or a ramp made out of chicken wire could also help.

Hedgehog Fact

Hedgehogs now appear to be declining in the UK at the same rate as tigers are globally – at around 50% a year, both in rural and urban habitats. (hedgehogstreet.org)

RHS Endorsed Hedgehog Friendly Gravel Boards

After learning about the declining number of hedgehogs, we developed the hedgehog friendly fence gravel board - which is essentially the same as a normal gravel board, with the addition of a hole at one end, large enough to allow hedgehogs free passage through, with a reinforcing strip along the top of the board to ensure it isn't weakened. The hedgehog gravel board design that was released by us in 2014 allows hedgehogs to happily roam freely between the gardens to feed and mate.

We have been delighted with the response from the public and wildlife organisations since we’ve launched this product, so many have been in touch in praise of the idea. What is important is that it is allowing us to raise awareness of the plight of the hedgehog and that’s got to be good!
