The beginning...
After moving from London to Kent and buying Stowting Farm in 1947, with the intention of taking up farming, Ian Jackson and
his father Harry Sands Jackson, recognised a gap in the market. They started selling chestnut fencing stakes and hay tripods to local farmers in
Kent. The company H S Jackson and Son was born.
1966 Jacksons ‘adds value’ to their products with timber treatment...
In 1966 Ian Jackson installs the first timber treatment plant at the
Jacksons Fencing timber yard in Stowting, after discovering that treated fencing stakes last for considerably longer than untreated ones. This‘adds value’ to his product and means better value for his customers. And the business grows . . .
Jacksons expands into the South West and North West of the country. In 1968 Ian Jackson buys the fencing yard at Chilcompton near Bath and
develops timber manufacturing there to service the farming community in the west country.>
Jacksons thrive in the 1970's and innovative garden panels widen Jacksons timber range. The company brochure: The Good Fencing Guide was also doing
an excellent job of selling Jacksons Fencing to farming and also residential customers.
In 1972 Jacksons takes over the Belgrave timber yard near Chester and can then also service farmers in the north west of England.

Jacksons Steel Security Fencing and Gates arrive . .
In the 1980s Jacksons start selling metal fencing to factories and schools.
The commercial market develops and by 1990 the company begins manufacturing steel security fencing and gates, this allows them to offer customised solutions
to fit customers individual needs.
Gate automation and access control..
As the steel fencing and gates market developed into the 1990s, the company realised the necessity of being at the forefront of gate automation by offering
the most up to date and advanced systems for access control. Soon Jacksons had developed automation for sliding and swing gates, with openings up to 16m
wide, residential operators for domestic entrance gates and automated traffic barriers.
In 1997 the company celebrated "Fifty years of Fine Fencing"
In 1998 Jacksons diversified by introducing the Secret Garden Collection - including decking, pergolas, arches, arbours and obelisks, to their already strong
timber range.
1998 also saw an investment in robotic technology to help produce Jacksons metal products. The system meant that metal fencing panels could
be welded with pin-point accuracy everytime. The finished results were then checked over by one of the company craftsmen.
The next major investment and development was the installation of a powder coating plant in 2003. This meant an improved service to the customer with
shortened lead times, as the coating is applied at Jacksons without the product having to travel elsewhere.
Jakoustic Sound barrier - more than just a fence Jacksons created a successful system for both commercial and residential applications that can reduce noise
levels by up to 10dB, helping combat the noise pollution that blights many people.
In 2007 the 25 Year Service Life Guarantee was introduced for Jacksons steel fencing and gates. Since the initial manufacturing of these products began,
Jacksons used the same stringent guidelines on their quality as had always been adhered to throughout their timber range, so it was appropriate to offer a 25
year guarantee on steel products to match timber.
In 2010 Gate Safe Campaign was spearheaded by Jacksons following the death of two children in separate automated gate incidents in 2010. The aim was to unite
the professions associated with automated gate installations, to encourage them to work together to improve standards in automated gate safety, and to raise
awareness to adhere to current safety legislation/guidelines.
Jacksons Show Gardens was another initiative in 2010 - after a national competition for
Garden Designers, four show gardens were built at the Kent HQ with three more in 2011. The show gardens project is now in its third year.
2012 Jacksons 65 years of Fine Fencing, Gates & More. .
The company holds a unique position in the market place, specialising in not just timber, but steel fencing and gates, and many associated products. It
boasts the widest product range in the UK and possibly Europe too.
The company has three fencing centres, with field representatives covering the whole
country, a French sales department, and Jacksons exports its products all over the world - covering Africa, Asia and Europe.
